Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Therapy can be beneficial for anyone looking to improve their mental health, work through challenges, or pursue personal growth. If you're experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or stress, having difficulty with relationships or life transitions, or simply feeling stuck, therapy might be helpful. I offer a free 20-minute consultation to help you determine if therapy is the right choice for you.

The first session is typically 90 minutes and focuses on getting to know you and understanding your concerns. We'll discuss your history, current challenges, and goals for therapy. This is also a time for you to ask questions and get a feel for whether we're a good fit. The session is collaborative and conducted at your pace.

The duration of therapy varies greatly depending on individual needs and goals. Some people find relief in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term work. We'll regularly review your progress and adjust our approach as needed. Therapy is ultimately a collaborative process, and you're always in control of how long you continue.

Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy. What you share in our sessions stays between us, with very few exceptions required by law: if there's a risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected child or elder abuse, or if records are court-ordered. I'll explain these limits during our first session.

Practical Information

Yes, I offer secure video sessions for clients who prefer the convenience of meeting from home or are unable to come to the office. Telehealth sessions are conducted through a HIPAA-compliant platform and are just as effective as in-person therapy for most concerns.

I require 24 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be charged the full session fee, except in cases of emergency. This policy ensures that I can offer that time slot to another client in need.

I am currently an out-of-network provider. I can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network benefits. I'm happy to help you understand your coverage during our consultation.

I accept credit and debit cards and Zelle transfers. Payment is due at the start of service. I also offer a sliding scale fee for those experiencing financial hardship - please don't hesitate to ask about this option.

Most clients begin with weekly sessions to establish momentum and build a strong therapeutic relationship. As you progress, we may move to biweekly or monthly sessions. The frequency depends on your needs, goals, and availability.

About Therapy

While these roles overlap, there are key differences in training and scope. Therapists, counselors, and social workers typically have master's degrees and provide talk therapy, case support, and crisis management. Psychologists hold a doctoral degree and can provide therapy and psychological testing. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who primarily focus on medication management. As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Board-Certified Registered Art Therapist, I provide evidence-based talk therapy and can also support you through creative expression.

Rather than giving direct advice, I'll help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and options so you can make decisions that align with your values and goals. Therapy is about empowering you to find your own answers with guided support and new perspectives.

It's completely normal to feel unsure about what to discuss, especially early in therapy. I'll help guide our conversations and ask questions to explore what's most important to you. There's no 'right' or 'wrong' thing to talk about - whatever is on your mind is valid.

While I primarily offer individual therapy, there may be times when it's helpful to include a partner, family member, or friend in a session. We can discuss this option and determine if it would be beneficial for your treatment goals.
